And now something completely different

Šį kartą apsukau propeleri teisinga kryptimi. Trauka pakankamai gera, skrenda neblogai, tik jaučiamas “traukimas” į kairę pusę. Matomai propelerio laikiklis nebuvo visiškai tiesiai pastatytas. Epoksidinė derva neatlaikė pirmojo nusileidimo. Degalinėje nusipirkom Super Moment’o. Šie klijai klaikiai netinka šiam uždaviniui. Paskraidžius keliolika minučių klijai aptirbdė putoplastą, variklio laikiklis atsipalaidavo ir viskas baigėsi “morka”. Kaip tai atrodė ir baigėsi siūlau pažiūrėt video įraše. Šeip metodas tinkantis, netrukdys įmontuoti video įrangai, propeleris nežustos vaizdo, tiesiog propelerio laikiklį reikės suploninti, padaryti aerodinamiškesnį ir savaime aišku priklijuoti tvirčiau ;)

This time I’ve mounted  the propeler in right direction. There was enought thrust, flight was ok, just there was noticeable drift to the left. It seems that propeler’s holder was not fitted right. Epoxy glue didn’t it’s job, and holder went of on the first landing. After that we’ve bought Super Moment glue in the nearest petrol station. It is a worst type of glue for this task. After short flight glue has etched the foam, engine holder has became loose and it ended with crash. How it looked like and what were results I suggest to see it for yourself in the video clip. Despite this, I’ve found that this engine mounting method is quite good, I’ll have space to fit a FPV camera, the propeler won’t block the view. I need to make holder slimmer, more aerodynamic and of course glue it better next time ;)

Propeler mounted on the wing

To make video recording more easy, I’ve mounted propeler on the wing, like in the EasyStar. It looks awful, but method is the same :)


Results are bad. Propeler cannot blow the air. There is no thrust. It couldn’t lift a mobile phone at all. Without it, the plane was flying, but still poorly. When wind changed direction, the plane was about to crash.

When the batteries have depleted…

Weather conditions were perfect, wind is 0-2 m/s, sun is setting, no clouds. Plane is damaged a little bit after last flight, but repaired and developed. Once the plane was in the air, it was obvious that something is wrong. Plane was thrown to all directions. Then I’ve noticed that battery low LED on the transmitter was blinking. Such situation was never happened to me before. I’ve tried to fly few more times, but with no luck. Every time plane crashed into ground :) . There were nasty moments when plane was loosing control above high trees and near high voltage power lines. To conclusion is simple: DON”T FLY ON LOW BATTERIES!

I was astonished by good “Sirijus” (one of the cheapest) batteries performance, they lasted for 2-3h flights. Right now I’m waiting for 8 SANYO Eneloog 2000 mAh rechargeable batteries from ebay. First of all I’ve ordered from dealextreme, but after 1.5 month they was still not shipped, so I’ve canceled order and ordered from ebay. These batteries are well received by users due to their low self-discharge rate, high capacity, high recharge cycles count. They are 3-4 times more expensive than chineese crap BTA where you can find only 150-250 mAh instead 2500 mAh which are declared. But they are 10-15% cheaper than expensive brands. When I’ll receive these batteries I’ll test how much the capacity they really have.

Today I’ve read interesting opinion, about what type of batteries we should use in transmitters. It seems that “low” capacity 1500-1700 mAh batteries can be charged with higher current than big ones (2000-2700 mAh). Smaller ones can be charged with 1000 mA, while big ones only with 250 mA. I can not not to mention the source of this information . It’s authors works with RC models more than 30 years and has written many interesting reviews. Very useful page with much practical and theory information. We won’t reach such level anytime soon so I really recommend you to take a glance there too.

Repair of the foam plane

After last flight I need to repair my plane. Front side is shaped out, side wall is cracked. What use for repair: epoxy adhesive, packing tape and plastic tubes, which are used to ship electronic parts samples. These tubes I’ve glued to on both sides and body became more or less straight.


Plastic tube is U shaped, so it is stables in all positions. Some weight is added so plane now fill fly not like an axe, but more like a brick. Hole for the mobile phone weakens the body, but I didn’t closed it, untill I figure out anothey way to capture video.

After repair front of the plane looks like new. Only expert could tell that there was an accident:


This time I’ve wing supports stronger. I’ve used that U shaped plastic tube and much more epoxy glue. Mountains of glue express the beauty of the interior design and makes body stronger. Packing tape gives mysterious look and make the plane unique.
